« Interleukin-22 modulates enteric nervous system function in zebrafish »

Cytokines are pivotal for tissue defense and homeostasis, particularly in barrier organs like the gut. Interleukin-22 (IL-22), a key cytokine, targets epithelial cells to protect the gut from pathogens. While IL-22 dysregulation is implicated in gut inflammation and cancer, its role in gut development remains unclear. Our work utilizing the zebrafish unveiled IL-22's novel role in modulating the enteric nervous system (ENS), with IL-22 knockout (KO) fish displaying dysregulated neuronal markers, impaired peristalsis, and disrupted food transit. Surprisingly, enteroendocrine cells, not immune cells, were the main IL-22 source in larval guts. Mechanistically, IL-22KO larval guts showed reduced serotonin levels and impaired expression of the hormone ghrelin. Abnormal gut microbiota composition was also observed in IL-22KO fish. Interestingly, microbiota transfer from wild-type to IL-22KO larvae, or incubation with serotonin or ghrelin, effectively restored peristalsis. These findings highlight the role of immune signals such as IL-22 in ENS function, offering insights into potential therapeutic interventions for immune-related gastrointestinal dysfunction.

“Cell Biology of Plants, and Beyond”
|
French Society for Cell Biology
Organisation: Florence Niedergang, Isabelle Tardieux and Yvon Jaillais
After the success of the two editions on “Cell Biology of Coronaviruses” and “Cell Biology of neurons, and Beyond” in 2023, the French Society for Cell Biology organizes its annual symposium on the Cell biology of Plants and beyond, with a great lineup of speakers made of plant biologists but not only! Marie Barberon, Amélie Bernard, Franziska Lautenschläger, Sophie Martin, Moritz Nowack, Thomas Ott, René Schneider, Joris Sprakel.
The objective of this meeting is to gather cell biologists working on plants and other systems around the topics of autophagy, cytoskeleton, cell/microbe interactions, membrane dynamics, cell death, polarization, nutrition and mechanobiology. We will have spots to select talks on abstract as well as posters. This day “Cell Biology of Plants, and Beyond” will be held on January 26, 2024, in a hybrid format (virtual/in-person in Lyon). I will be in the amphitheater Mérieux of ENS Lyon. The symposium is free but registration is mandatory: Registration at: https://sbcf.fr/event/the-cell-biology-of-plants-2024/ Pre-program: https://filesender.ens-lyon.fr/?vid=40126472-c8e4-41a9-1354-00006ea67cde |
